Treatments for insomnia

Medical treatment

Your GP will assess your condition and try and find out the root cause of your insomnia, so that they can make a correct diagnosis and offer you the best form of treatment. This may include cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and sleeping pills (a temporary medication).

Self-care

There is a lot you can do to help your symptoms of insomnia, by making some simple-yet-effective changes to your lifestyle:-

  • Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day
  • Only go to bed when you feel tired
  • Relax before bed, read or take a warm bath
  • Make sure your bedroom is dark and quiet – use an eye mask, thick curtains or ear plugs
  • Make sure your bed and bed linen is clean and comfortable
  • Avoid alcohol, coffee or tea at least 6 hours before going to bed (caffeine free options are also advised)
  • Avoid exercise at least 4 hours before bed
  • Avoid watching television, playing video games or using computers or phones before bed, the bright light will keep your mind stimulated and awake
  • Try to avoid taking naps during the day
  • Avoid driving if you feel sleepy during the day
  • If you have had a bad night’s sleep, try not to sleep during the day – stick to your regular scheduled sleeping hours

Medical Cannabis for insomnia

Cannabis medications can offer effective relief from the symptoms of insomnia, without side-effects that some conventional medications provide. Cannabis Medicines help to restore the natural sleep pattern cycle, which can often fall out of sync in today’s modern, busy lifestyle. Cannabis medication also offers an anti-anxiety effect, helping to soothe a stressed out body and mind. Cannabis medications can be taken in several ways, from tablets and oil tinctures to specialised cannabis flower vaporisers.
